A seal number helps identify a container closure. Coordinate with your representative and the person responsible for the cargo to establish who supplies, applies and records the seal at each stage.
Before closing the container
- Confirm the container number and shipment reference.
- Check the seal type required for the route, terminal and cargo with the operations contact.
- Check that the seal is intact and its number is readable.
Recording and handover
Record the seal number and compare it with the shipment documents before handover. Where the operating procedure allows it, keep a clear photograph of the applied seal and the container number.
If a seal is missing, broken or mismatched
Pause handover or opening until you receive instructions from the operations contact, provided it is safe to do so. Report the issue with the shipment reference, container number, location and time. Preserve the available evidence. Do not replace the seal on your own.
If an authority inspects the container or authorizes a change, request the relevant record and communicate both the previous and replacement seal numbers to the shipment contact.
Confirming requirements
Specific requirements are coordinated for each shipment. Contact Blue Marine Line before delivering cargo if you do not have shipment instructions.
